Surfer. Coach. Always learning too.

I'm Julian.

I know how it feels to enter the water full of motivation and still feel stuck. That's exactly why I want to help you understand your surfing better.

I grew up in southwest Germany, near the Black Forest. Sport has always been part of my life, from basketball and athletics to snowboarding and skating. Surfing came later. And stayed.

My path to coaching.

Waves, people, perspectives

01

Australia

Starting for myself.

After leaving my law degree, I head to Australia in my early twenties. On its long right-hand point breaks, I discover surfing. For nine months I teach myself, using videos, friends' tips and plenty of trial and error.

Then I try coaching myself. That outside perspective changes my surfing and makes me want to offer others the same guidance.

02

El Cotillo & Mentawai

Sharing experience.

Back in Europe, I start teaching and work for two surf schools in El Cotillo. Later, I coach at a resort in Indonesia's Mentawai Islands.

Different waves, small groups and people with different goals shape how I see learning. For more than five years, I have helped surfers follow their own path.

03

Fuerteventura

Coaching with care.

I've known the Canary Islands since my teens. Today, Fuerteventura is my home and El Cotillo my base. I love the volcanic landscape, life by the sea and the people who come together here.

With The Private Surf Company, I share what helped me: clarity, confidence and enjoyment of progress. I continue training and remain a learner myself.

My qualifications.

ISA Level 1
Surf Instructor

ISA Level 2

Lifeguard

I completed my ISA training with Dean Gough.

My approach

I look closely.
And first, I listen.

What would you like to learn? What is holding you back? What already feels good?

That becomes a session that suits you. With clear explanations, honest feedback and a specific next step. Your body, experience and pace guide the way.

Respect and encouragement are part of my approach. We set realistic goals and recognise small steps forward too.

No more than two coaching sessions a day.
So there is time for you.

From your question to your next wave

We find your focus.

We discuss your experience and goals. I choose the spot and equipment to suit your level and the conditions. Board and wetsuit are included.

You understand why.

Before entering the water, we discuss safety, currents, orientation and line-up etiquette. After warming up, we practise on land and take the movement into the water.

You take something away.

Direct feedback and a review together guide your next session. We can arrange video analysis as an addition. There is always room for questions.

Your level. Your next step.

One beginning.
Many possibilities.

We work on what helps you move forward now, from a stable stance to a flowing turn. Each day, we choose the surf spot based on wind, waves, currents and your ability.

Your first waves

Beginner. Board control, paddling, take-off and a stable stance in whitewater help you build confidence. We practise with a beginner-friendly board and at your own pace.

The unbroken wave

Intermediate. Read unbroken waves, position yourself, take off at an angle when appropriate and connect your first changes of direction. We also work on reaching the line-up safely.

More flow in your manoeuvres

Advanced. Use speed, rail engagement and body rotation with purpose. We refine your bottom turn, cutback or re-entry to suit your ability and the conditions.

Now it's your turn.

What would you like to
change in the water?

Let's find your next step together.
